Three weeks after Mohamed Nasheed resigned as President of the Maldives, members of Parliament from his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) blocked the country's new President Mohamed Waheed from opening parliament.

Nasheed alleges he was ousted in a coup and that his resignation came at gunpoint. Additionally, protesters called for early elections and challenged the legitimacy of the new government.
