On January 8, Akbaruddin Owaisi, a member of the All India Majlis-e Ittihad al-Muslimeenn (Council of the Union of Muslims, or MIM) party who serves in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, was arrested on charges of creating hostility between groups and attempting to wage war against the government of India. The charges came after a December 24 speech in which Osaiwi reportedly said the Muslims of India could overpower Hindus if the police turned a blind eye.
