Malaysians are preparing for what organisers hope will be a mass anti-government rally in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. Opposition parties recently claimed that they will mobilise around 300,000 supporters to fill the city's Merdeka Stadium, despite warnings from the venue's management that the capacity is limited to 30,000.
Malaysia's ruling coalition has warned, however, that the rally could turn into a repeat of last year's Bersih (or "clean") demonstration if the number of protestors exceeds the stadium's limit. The latest Bersih rally, held last April, ended with riot police firing tear gas and water cannons into crowds after a small group of broke through police barriers.
