The repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” was lauded as a great milestone, preventing the dismissal of US troops from the military due to their sexual orientation. Although this permitted gays in the military to be more open, it did not necessarily afford their spouses with benefits like housing and health insurance. This is in large part due to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which only allows the military to recognise marriages between a man and a woman.
