According to the UN, one in every three women - or approximately one billion of the world's population - will be raped or abused in her lifetime by an intimate partner.

On Thursday, global anti-violence protests under the "One Billion Rising" campaign brought attention to those one billion women at risk. The events, which took place in more than 190 countries, were organised by the anti-violence activist movement V-Day.
