Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter - Greta singt "Mein kleines Herz"ufafiction
The show follows five young Germans living in Berlin during the Second World War. It is through their stories that producer Nico Hofmann sought to provoke a national dialogue. Hoffman reveals in a discussion with
that he partly created the series for his own father, who like many Germans of that generation, played a role in the war, but never spoke of it.
Translation: "Our mothers, our fathers" was one of the strongest elements of German television in the last few years.
"Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter" war eines der stärksten Stücke deutsches Fernsehen seit Jahren. #umuvThomas Knuewer
Jayzus. "Unsere Mütter, Unsere Väter" is marvellously cultured, brilliantly acted but unrelentingly harrowing. ＃musicmaestro ?Mark Nightingale

Despite its large viewership, many remained critical.
Columnist Jennifer Nathalie Pyka describes her frustration with the series in
, Germany's leading Jewish weekly, "a film about World War II that omits the bothersome question of six million dead Jews."
Historian Ulrich Herbert, also responded negatively to the widely popular show:
Translation: The five protagonists appear to be unconnected to the times. In the introductory scenes, following the victory over France in the Spring of 1941, the admiration for Hitler, National Socialism and the war had reached its zenith. During these times, all historians agree, the regime was supported by the majority of Germans.
Bloggers responded to these criticisms.
But the film aims to show how the war corrupted EVEN THOSE who did not necessarily sign up to all aspects of Nazism. It actually extends responsibility to those NOT cheering Hitler on. When they begin to think about their actions, they cannot escape into the apologetics of ideological blindness, because they were not blind. They do what they do with open eyes. That is the power of this series.onthepast.blog.co.uk
Like the war, criticism did not remain within Germany's borders. On Wednesday, Poland's ambassador to Germany, Jerzy Marganski, brought forward some Poles' reaction to the series. In a letter to German public television, he stated:
"The image of Poland and the Polish resistance against the German occupiers as conveyed by this series is perceived by most Poles as extremely unjust and offensive," Marganski wrote. "I, too, am shocked."haaretz.com
