About 1,000 high school students walked out of class on Tuesday to protest education budget cuts in the US state of New Jersey. The Newark Student Union organized the city-wide walkout to draw attention to decreased state funding for Newark schools. The shortage of assistance has led to teacher layoffs, deteriorating classrooms, school closures, and cuts to after-school programmes.

Governor Chris Christie's original 2010 education budget cuts were ruled unconstitutional by New Jersey's Supreme Court in 2011. At that time, aid was increased to honour constitutionally mandated funding levels for poor schools, but full funding was not restored. Tuesday's protesters want increased education funding before officials finalize the 2014 state budget.
