Plans for the global march have renewed focus on widespread protests taking place in the US state of Hawaii, which claims to be "
" in the fight against biotech corporations and GMOs.
In the past 20 years, these chemical companies have performed over 5,000 open-field-test experiments of pesticide-resistant crops on an estimated 40,000 to 60,000 acres of Hawaiian land without any disclosure, making the place and its people a guinea pig for biotech engineering.intercontinentalcry.org
Local campaigns like
Save Hawaii from Monsanto
Babes Against BioTech
have already organised petitions and state-wide protests against the GMO giant. In March, Save Hawaii from Monsanto held marches across several of the chain's southeastern islands: Oahu, Kuau'i, Hawai'i, Maui and Moloka'i.
Monsanto claims that activists' efforts in Hawaii have led to a culture of intimidation on the islands and has hindered it from working alongside local communities.
Below an excerpt of Monsanto's open letter, published as an ad in The Maui News:
"Lately, you may have seen or read a lot of things about Monsanto Hawaii, including some very outrageous and untruthful claims. We'd like to take a moment to speak up on behalf of our thousand employees and families. ...First and foremost we are farmers. ...Our fields have been threatened with destruction, we've been individually targeted and harasses, and our friends and neighbors attacked with with hate language and racial slurs. This irresponsible and violent behavior generates needless fear and divides our community".
Uhhh, I don't know any "farmers" that made $13.5 billion last year!facebook.com
