The supreme court of El Salvador has denied one woman what could be a life-saving abortion. The 22-year old, known only as 'Beatriz,' suffers from health complications that would pose a serious risk to her life should she give birth. The foetus that she carries is also missing a large part of its brain, and is likely to die within hours should it be carried to term.
Beatriz's case has garnered worldwide attention, receiving support from international human rights groups and El Salvador's ministry of health. After weeks of challenges to the country's strict anti-abortion laws, the court ruled against Beatriz, saying "the rights of the mother cannot take precedence over those of the unborn child".
