Protesters critical of President Enrique Pena Nieto clashed with police inside a Mexico City subway station on June 1. Organising under the banner “#MexicoSOS”, activists were planning to occupy the president’s official residence to voice their grievances with the government’s handling of poverty and corruption. The event quickly spread on social media under the hashtag #OcupaLosPinos.

The group has organised a strategic 30-day campaign called “Operation Disobedience” with the goal of forcing President Nieto out of office, according to its Facebook page. Further protests are scheduled for June 4, 5, 15, 22 and July 1.
