Offended, O'Brien wrote a biting letter in which she demonstrated her credentials and
"You are reading my journalistic work, using my journalistic work, capitalizing off of my journalistic work, and linking to my journalistic work about the largest criminal investigation ever into a publisher and its source".
NYT staff quickly responded:
No slight was intended at all, @carwinb, to you or your work. Sorry to have caused offence. It's now been corrected.
The following correction was added to the article:

One Twitter user weighed in on why the distinction is important:
@firetomfriedman @carr2n @ravisomaiya @carwinb "Activist" label meant to imply "cause over truth". Alexa O'Brien totally devoted to "truth".Ramsey Haddad
A similar issue arose when NYT referred to Glenn Greenwald as a blogger.
@glynmoody Shame on #NYT,it's an ongoing disgrace the lack of acknowledgement to legend Journos Alexa O'Brien & Glenn "the blogger"GreenwaldDiani Barreto
Apparently having opinions makes @glenngreenwald a "blogger" rather than a journalist. How very 2005.
With news organizations strapped for resources, independent journalists have increasingly filled the coverage void left by their absent affiliated counterparts. In fact, O'Brien's coverage was used by NYT because
none of their own reporters
were present at the trials. O'Brien referenced the lack of in-depth mainstream coverage as her motivation to produce the
record of the military court proceedings.
Basically what is going on is the massively compromised, money-first old school media re looking to discredit the agile, focused and digitally native independent journalists that are replacing them.boingboing.net
Journalist Dana Blankenhorn added:
A journalist is someone who practices journalism. It's not a title that belongs to The New York Times or any other organization.boingboing.net
