The chairman of one of the largest Italian pasta companies in the world, Guido Barilla, recently told an Italian radio show that he would never feature gay couples in his advertisements. He added that if gay consumers don't like it, "they can always go eat someone else’s pasta".

Italian activists and Twitter users reacted by calling for a boycott on the company, using the hashtag #BoicottaBarilla almost 15,000 times. Barilla's statements and subsequent apology fueled the country's ongoing gay rights debate.
