James Anaya, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples on a recent trip to Canada,
"From all I have learned, I can only conclude that Canada faces a
when it comes to the situation of indigenous peoples of the country".
Research shows that
50 per cent of aboriginal high-school students do not graduate and that one in three aboriginal adults are
a high school education:

Anaya's remarks come at the helm of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's controversial
First Nations Education Act
that calls for a reform of the current education system to address this disparity.
The Bill is the focal point in Prime Minister Harper's aboriginal affairs agenda. However the Act has been criticized for being '
to the history and traditions of the Aboriginal communities in Canada.
@AJStream I've no faith that anything from a colonial source, especially in education, has any purpose but assimilation. Indigenous control!Adrian Jacobs
@DeemaAlpha @AJStream is educational equality more important than sovereignty? Means for the Canadian govt to exert control via education?..Kathryn B
Aboriginal chiefs also
that they were not consulted when the act was drafted.
When did we get to a point where everyone has a voice but no one is heard? No consent from us under treaty equals No #FNEA!!Derek Nepinak
Some see the act as an extension of Canadian
The government must stop making top down decisions for First Nations and know, we have "the know", we survived for thousands of years before contact on these lands. I do not remember, ever hearing my grandparents saying they needed to send word to the colonial powers before moving on their own sovereignty and inherent rights to these lands and in all social aspects of life.stream.aljazeera.com
@AJStream It is a violation of Treaty. It is anti-Treaty. It is colonialism. It perpetuates a colonial locus-of-control for FN education.Adrian Jacobs
@AJStream I think it's more entitled white guy, "we know best for you". I want to hear from FNmargaret resin
Many indigenous communities also fear the act will take
from the local native communities and place it in the hands of federal bureaucrats.
@AJStream FN control of agenda and funding. FN recognition of community educators (elders, Clanmothers, traditional chiefs, medicine people)Adrian Jacobs
with the reform has been one of funding with many arguing that the current system does not need an overhaul but simply an infusion of federal aid:
We don't need reform, but adequate nationwide funding to support a comprehensive First Nations system #NEL #cdnpoli
@AJStream A failed/broken system can't be fixed without funding. Aboriginal Canadians & the Harper government should rethink the reforms.alhaji chodi
Many see the proposed education reform as another form of the 1960s
residential school project where aboriginal children were taken away from their native communities to be adopted by white families.

The History of "Aboriginal" Education in Canada has been a primary tool of the assimilation agenda...it still is and #FNEA proves it.Dawn Marie

We asked our community how the issue could be resolved:
For starters the Candaian gov. could sit down with First Nations and actully talk to them to find out what they need and not just tell them what they are going to try to force on to them!Mark B Davison
Our legislators are not able to negotiate the First Nation and talks intermittently berm walk off and there is no cooperation. In order floor the kids to succeed we have to find a consensus. The govt has not been able to find a meeting ground.facebook.com
