As millions of viewers tuned in on Sunday to the top football event in the United States, the Super Bowl, many took to Twitter using #NotYourMascot to protest against the Redskins, the name of Washington, D.C.’s football team. Supporters of the Change the Mascot campaign say the term “Redskins” is regarded by Native Americans, and others, as a racial slur.

The National Congress of American Indians re-ignited the mascot name debate last week after it released a commercial they said “the [National Football League] would never air”.
