to even one Ivy League university is rare among even the top students in the United States. In 2013, Cornell had the highest acceptance rate at 15.2 per cent. Harvard only accepted 5.8 per cent.
Enin's story was submitted to
on Monday. While many were celebrating Enin's achievements, some Reddit users focused on his race and use of affirmative action in college admissions.
Was expecting to read about some new prodigy. Came away disappointed, finding out it's just the next example of affirmative action and college selectionism.reddit.com
Face it, whites and asians. Your time is over. We should ban all whites and asians from attending college for the next 20 years, so the world can see the true strength and ingenuity of the black race.reddit.com
If I take anything away from this thread, it's that white people have it bad and that they are treated unfairly. I should feel sorry for white people.reddit.com
Sure, his test scores arent the best, and maybe his extracurriculars arent as colorful as others, but that doesnt mean he doesnt deserve it. The point here is that plenty of people who apply deserve it, but get rejected. Not trying to discredit this guy or anything, but trust me, hes not more deserving than the guy next to him who applied. The fact that he was accepted to all 8 is ridiculous and really shows how much colleges value diversity rather than mental aptitude.reddit.com
I'm gonna get real with you reddit, no matter how pissed this makes you it doesn't change the fact that he would not have had this absurd success if he was a white kid.reddit.com
The tone of the Reddit thread changed to support:
Reading some of these comments, I do think that a lot of them are filled with subtle hints or racism. Here we have a young man that worked hard, and achieved something most of us could only dream of. Instead of celebrating his achievements, a lot of the comments are "Lets be honest, if he was White or Asian he would not have gotten in" or "I know someone with better scores and they did not even get into one". These comments tell me that there is a sense of entitlement, and in someway anger and jealousy at this young man's accomplishments.reddit.com
Guys, I'm no affirmative action fan, but this kid is legitimately qualified.reddit.com
Kwasi is a good friend of mine. Although race does play a role in college admissions, he is truly brilliant and deserves his success. He got in because everything he does, he does extremely well. He is hardworking, smart, talented, and hilarious. I'll never forget the day it happened...I texted him and asked how Ivy day went, and he said "All 8 to my name." He's a boss.reddit.com
Twitter and Facebook users were happy to celebrate with him:
#KwasiEnin, I salute you. You are brilliant. You will CONTINUE to rise. This is only the beginning.Phallyy
Congrats to Kwasi Enin for being accepted to all 8 Ivy League schools. Remarkably, he's 11th in his HS class. That's some high school!Tom
I think its safe to say that #KwasiEnin is in a league of his own.Chelsea Smart
Shortly after receiving so much attention online, Enin joined Twitter.
First tweet ever. The world and my friends, I love you and all the support you give. But, can I do this? #KwasiEnin
