South Africa tackles sports racial quota increase
Athletes and fans debate Sports Ministry resolution moving goal posts on international sports’ race-based quotas.
South Africa’s top sports teams must field 60 per cent black players or be banned from representing the country internationally, according to a new resolution from the Department of Sport. Minister Fikile Mbalula drew criticism from teams and fans after the announcement, while others supported the move.
Currently teams must follow a 50-50 quota system, but according to Mbalula, a “lack of willingness in implementing transformation” led to the increase. Mbalula said on Saturday:
