Russia trolls US in Ukraine Twitter spat

US official's response to Russian hashtag takeover invites foreign policy criticism.

Russia's co-opting of a hashtag, promoted by the US government to support its Ukraine policy, paid off in a small way on Thursday evening, after a US State Department official's tweet triggered sarcastic responses from Ukraine watchers on Twitter.

The tweet by US Department of State spokesperson Jen Psaki was apparently sent in response to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' use of #UnitedForUkraine. The US government began promoting the hashtag in late March, and Secretary of State John Kerry and other US officials have frequently used it to push US foreign policy in the region. The Russian foreign ministry (@MFA_Russia) first appropriated the hashtag on Wednesday, and has since tweeted it more than a dozen times:
