South Africans protest #SanralEvictions

Destruction of informal settlement in South Africa prompts accusations of human rights violations.

Hundreds of families have been left homeless in Lwandle settlement, Cape Town after it was destroyed by the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL). Three people were arrested for violence during the evictions, where petrol bombs were being thrown and tyres burnt.

SANRAL contends that the residents were occupying private land that was part of a national road, and they had notified the community of impending evictions in January. They claimed to have made agreements with the city to develop property to relocate Lwandle community members.

South Africans online used #SanralEvictions#CTEvictions and #Lwandle to protest the evictions. Many shared images and videos from the settlement, showing destroyed homes and displaced residents.
