Papua New Guineans say #OccupyWaigani after corruption crackdown

Prime minister criticised for blocking investigation into alleged multi-million dollar fraud case against him.

Papua New Guineans have gathered outside parliament in Waigani, a suburb of the capital, to protest their prime minister’s crackdown on a corruption investigation against his office.

The protest Friday comes days after authorities issued a warrant for Prime Minister Peter O’Neill’s arrest. Following the warrant, O’Neill fired key police officers involved in the investigation of alleged multi-million dollar fraud. He also shut down the corruption watchdog Task Force Sweep, accusing its team of conspiring with other politicians against him.

Online, many used #OccupyWaigani and #ArrestPeter to encourage others to protest. They also shared images of small groups of activists demonstrating outside parliament and other areas around the city.
