Chile’s land war
The Stream examines the Mapuche tribe’s campaign to reclaim its ancestral land.
A battle over land is brewing in Chile. The country’s indigenous, the Mapuche, are fighting to reclaim ancestral territory. Although Chile’s president has agreed to return a few areas, some Mapuche are resorting to violence to gain ground. Others want the government to keep the land but give them more representation in congress. Can the conflict be settled before the violence escalates?
