The display of support took place against a backdrop of mistrust between police and minorities in New York City. In addition to the killing of Garner by police, which has since been ruled a

the United Federation of Teachers asked educators not to wear the shirts on the first day of class as "messages may appear to be supportive, but individuals (parents, students) may see a different meaning in that message".
