Ted Cruz booed off stage at Christian unity event

US Senator says he will not stand with anyone who won’t stand with Israel.

Ted Cruz, a Republican US Senator from Texas, was booed off stage on Wednesday at a unity event for Middle Eastern Christians after urging them to stand in solidarity with Israel. Cruz’s remarks took place at a gala for In Defense of Christians, an organisation that advocates for minorities in the Middle East.

According to a transcript from the speech, Cruz reportedly told the audience that Christians have no better ally than Israel, as he spoke of a “genocidal campaign” waged by ISIS, Al Qaeda, Hezbollah, Hamas, and the governments of Syria and Iran. The crowd denounced his comments as he spoke, forcing him to end his remarks.

“I am saddened to see that some here, not everyone, but some here are so consumed with hate…if you will not stand with Israel and the Jews, then I will not stand with you,” Cruz announced shortly before walking off stage. Video of Cruz’s last comments and the audience reaction were widely shared.
