The Stream

Listening to Deaf culture

The Stream discusses the experiences of those who are culturally deaf.

People who are deaf or hard-of-hearing often deal with the misconception that they are a language-less community. Yet in many countries, deaf people have their own sign languages, unique culture, and do not consider themselves disabled. Many embrace their hearing loss as “deaf gain” and, like other cultural minority groups, are asking for greater recognition. So, what’s being done to increase understanding between deaf and hearing people? And how can societies improve deaf rights and accessibility? Join the conversation at 19:30 GMT.
