Should Muslims be expected to speak up against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant?

Should Muslims be expected to apologise for, or condemn, the actions of groups like ISIL? With violence being committed in the name of Islam making headlines, many Muslims are responding with social media campaigns to make clear ISIL’s actions do not represent the faith. Others, however, reject requests to speak out against the group or their ideology. They argue Muslims are unfairly singled out to prove they’re “moderate”. So what’s the appropriate response?
