‘Whisper’ app accused of secretly tracking users

New report reveals how secret-sharing app may monitor its users.

Whisper, an app touting itself as a place to share anonymous secrets, has been tracking users’ locations and sharing information with government agencies, according to a new report in The Guardian.

The company, which is disputing the accusations, launched two years ago and was recently valued by investors at more than $200 million. Its users publish nearly 2.6 million “secret” messages per day.

The Guardian recently explored a partnership with Whisper and was given access to the company’s internal system. The news organization backed out of the proposed deal and published its findings after learning about Whisper’s methods of monitoring users without their knowledge.
