Venezuelans stand with opposition leader accused of plot to kill the president

#YoEstoyConMariaCorina trends as formal charges of conspiracy expected on Wednesday.

UPDATE: On Wednesday, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was charged with involvement in an alleged plot to assassinate President Nicolas Maduro. Machado has rejected the charge, which carries a maximum of 16 years in prison.

 

Venezuelans online are showing their support for opposition leader Maria Corina Machado as she awaits formal charges of conspiracy to murder the nation’s president. Last week, the state prosecutor announced that Machado will be charged on December 3 for involvement in an alleged plan to kill President Nicolas Maduro. 

The president’s Socialist party contends emails intercepted by the government show a link between Machado and the alledged plot. Machado and other opposition leaders deny the accusations and vow to continue their political protests.
