The Stream

A holiday tradition of blackface

The Stream examines the debate surrounding the Dutch custom of ‘Zwarte Piet’.

Controversy surrounding the Netherland’s holiday custom of dressing in blackface may be reaching a tipping point. “Black Pete” protesters flooded the streets during last month’s Sinterklaas parade. They say dressing up as Saint Nicholas’ black sidekick is blatant racism. But supporters say it’s just part of the celebration. The Stream chats with both sides, including actor Erik Van Muiswinkel, Monday at 1930 GMT.
