Kenyan schoolchildren tear-gassed during #OccupyPlayground protest

Reports of children hospitalised with injuries after demonstration.

Police in Kenya fired tear gas at a group of protesters, including schoolchildren, during a demonstration on Monday against plans to tear down a playground.

The students, who attend nearby Langata Road Primary School in Nairobi, attempted to remove a wall erected around the playground by a land developer.

Facebook page started by activist Boniface Mwangi says the playground was seized “by a group of known professional land grabbers acting on behalf of a very senior politician”. Kenyan MP Kenneth Okoth, who also participated in the protest, told news outlets that at least 10 students were hospitalised with injuries.

Kenyans on Twitter circulated images from the protest with the hashtag #OccupyPlayground:
