Shooting of South African teen leads to protests and looting, allegedly targeting shops owned by foreign nationals.

The killing of South African teen Mthetheleli Siphiwe Mahori, allegedly by a foreign shop owner, has sparked turmoil in Soweto. The teen was killed on Monday, reportedly following an attempt to rob the store. Police say the store owner has since been charged with murder as well as possession of an illegal firearm. Locals have protested and looted shops in the wake of the teen’s death. As the unrest continues, many online discussed what role xenophobia has played in determining which stores were targeted for theft.
