UNICEF, UNAIDS along with other international health organisations
the 'All In' campaign. Their goal is to engage young people in the global fight to end AIDS by 2030.
Elijah Simel gave a speech at the campaign launch in Kenya on February 17:
H.E @UKenyatta with young Elijah Simel, a Junior Advocate for children born and living with HIV. #EndAdolescentAIDS
Eleven year old Simel was born with HIV. His mother told him his status when he was six years old. Now Simel encourages everybody to give children and young people information about HIV/AIDS.
Below is an excerpt of Simel's speech during 2014 World AIDS Day:
Now I understand well what I need to do to protect the soldiers of my body from getting overthrown by the HIV in this government I call MY BODY. I pay close attention to my eating, sleeping, reading and playing.unicef.org
shows that 80 per cent of girls and 71 per cent of boys (15-19 years old) do not fully understand how HIV is transmitted and can be prevented.
In Zambia teenagers turn to text messages to get advice and information about the virus:
One asks, “I have a girl who has HIV and now she is talking about marriage what can I do with her?“ Another wants to know “when you kiss someone deeply can it be possible to contract the virus?“thestar.com.my
The lack of knowledge about HIV/AIDS among adolescents is widespread. In the US one third of teenagers
do not know
that HIV can be transmitted sexually.
Many point out that in order to prevent new HIV infections sex education is vital:
@AJStream Mandatory basic lessions in biology in class 7 (divided by gender) may at least educate the fact that condoms are w/o alternative!Netzblockierer
@AJStream sex education is a must in a country like #Nepal where most people cannot even utter the word "sex" without hesitation.Zhreya!
@AJStream Because sex is being portrayed as a treat for people who are liberated. #HIV/#AIDS has become a lifestyle diseaseJoiedevivre
Every hour 30 adolescents are newly infected with HIV,

Most adolescent friendly centers are not really friendly. If we must #EndAdolescentAIDS, these centers must be 100% friendly. @EVA_NigeriaHealthPostNG
To fight stigma and encourage others, a group of HIV positive children and adolescents from Zimbabwe have come out publicly to describe the way in which they have learned "how to dance in the storm."
