Lebanese march for civil marriage

Hundreds fight ongoing battle for civil marriage recognition.

Hundreds of Lebanese took to the streets in protest on Sunday to demand officials recognise civil marriage in the country. Activists say the government has stalled in legalising marriages.

Lebanon’s Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk said in early February there will be no recognition until procedures are implemented to regulate marriage contracts. The comment sparked a new wave of protests, with activists marching from the American University of Beirut to the Interior Ministry calling for secularism and civil marriage.
