John Kerry’s Syria remarks spark #KerryNoNegoWithKiller

US Secretary of State criticised for saying talks with President Assad are necessary to end the conflict in Syria.

On the fourth anniversary of the Syrian crisis, US Secretary of State John Kerry opened the door to talks with Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, saying “We have to negotiate in the end”. Kerry’s remarks seemed to backtrack from the standard US line that Assad has permanently lost all legitimacy. The US State Department quickly clarified that Kerry was not specifically referring to Assad, adding that Washington would never negotiate with him.
