#MexicoWantsAristeguiBack calls for global action

Investigative journalist’s firing sparks campaign against censorship and corruption in Mexico.

#MexicoWantsAristeguiBack launched one week after prominent journalist Carmen Aristegui was fired by MVS Radio. The campaign aims to be the voice of Carmen ‘as she was the voice of people, denouncing corruption, violence, conflict of interests, and assassinations of activists, journalists and thousands of citizens by government and organised crime’.

Last year Aristegui and her team reported on alleged corruption surrounding the purchase of a mansion by Mexico’s first lady. Two of Aristegui’s colleagues were later fired by MVS for their participation in MexicoLeaks, a website devoted to revealing official corruption. Aristegui has been publicly feuding with MVS since, demanding the colleagues be reinstated. The broadcaster says it fired Aristegui because it could not allow employees to “impose conditions and ultimatums on the administration”.

Organisers of the online campaign urged users to mention #MexicoWantsAristeguiBack at least 11 times a day on social media startingat 11:11 am Monday. #MexicoWantsAristeguiBack has been used more than 130,000 times and is the top trending hashtag in Mexico.
