‘Mums and Maids’: Championing Singapore’s domestic workers or shaming mothers?

Campaign urging employers to give domestic staff a day off sparks conversation about women and workers’ rights.

A new video calls on Singapore’s employers to give their domestic workers at least one day off per week to mark Labour Day on May 1. The initiative IGiveADayOff.org was organised by migrant workers group Transient Workers’ Count Two (TWC2) and marketing firm Ogilvy & Mather.

Interviewers ask mothers and their domestic staff a series of question about their children, with the children’s answers shown separately. The video concludes, “Shouldn’t we spend more time with our children? Let’s give domestic workers their legal days off”.
