#Schulstreik: German students rally for refugees

Hundreds join ‘School Strike’ in Berlin to protest government’s handling of migrant crisis.

Under the banner “Our Friends Stay Here”, students in Berlin staged a protest on Friday to criticise the EU and Germany’s handling of Europe’s ongoing migrant crisis.

Over the past three weeks, more than 1,300 migrants have died in the Mediterranean Sea while attempting to enter Europe. Last weekend, an estimated 800 people drowned in the Mediterranean’s worst-ever migrant disaster.

Organisers of Friday’s rally say migrants who arrive in Germany face discrimination and poor treatment, and that the government isn’t doing enough to combat racism.

“Those who are able to overcome physical barriers are confronted and oppressed by an institutionalised racism, deeply ingrained in society,” says a statement on the “Refugee School Strike” website.
