Residents #CleanUpBaltimore after clashes between police and protesters

Volunteers organise clean-up efforts on social media.

Residents of the US city of Baltimore are cleaning up areas affected by riots after the Monday funeral of a young black man who died while in police custody. Freddie Gray’s spinal cord was severed following his arrest, in what medical experts speculate was caused by “significant force”. Looting, vandalism, and clashes between protesters and police led Maryland’s governor to declare a state of emergency and deploy the national guard.

Clean-up efforts are being organised by individuals and groups on social media sites. One Facebook event had more than 2,000 people saying they would attend.
