#NopeNopeNope: Backlash after Australian PM rejects stranded refugees

Tony Abbott says Australia will not resettle any Rohingya migrants.

Australian prime minister Tony Abbott met a wave of criticism on Thursday after saying his country will not receive any of the thousands of Rohingya refugees currently stranded at sea.

When asked by a reporter whether Australia will resettle any of the refugees, Abbott responded with “Nope, nope, nope”.

“Australia will do absolutely nothing that gives any encouragement to anyone to think that they can get on a boat, that they can work with people smugglers to start a new life,” Abbott elaborated.

Many shot back with #NopeNopeNope, criticising the prime minister for his comments.
