Marchers protest femicide in Argentina

Latinos raise awareness using #NiUnaMenos following the killing of a 14-year-old pregnant girl.

Demonstrators are set to gather in cities across Argentina and two other Latin American countries on Wednesday to bring awareness to violence against women. The march is part of the social media campaign #NiUnaMenos (Not One Less) that followed outrage over high profile homicide cases in the region including the killing of a 14-year-old pregnant schoolgirl in May. The hashtag was used more than 152,600 times on June 3rd.

According to organisers, the media reported on 1,808 femicides in Argentina between 2008 and 2014. Additionally, a woman is killed every 30 hours in Argentina, the group says. The campaign asks Argentina to commit to five demands including comprehensive sex education, and protection of victims and access to “free legal representation”.

Many encouraged people to join the June 3rd’s demonstrations.
