Ecuadorians say ‘Correa, out!’ following ‘redistribution of wealth’ bill
Protesters continue streak of demonstrations despite halt on proposed tax law.
Following days of protests in several Ecuadorian cities against a proposed inheritance and capital gains tax law, President Rafael Correa “temporarily” halted the bill on Monday. The president previously said the inheritance law would seek “a fair redistribution of wealth” and affect just a small portion of the population. While government supporters rallied under #SomosMas (We Are More), the opposition called for Correa to step down using #FueraCorreaFuera (Out Correa Out).
The bill was initially sent to Congress on Friday, where the president’s party enjoys a majority. The law would have applied to inheritances larger than $35,400; down from where it currently stands at $68,800.
