#YouKnowItsAColouredSchool: South Africans bring attention to racial inequality in the school system

Tweets discuss racial stereotypes and lack of resources in ‘coloured’ schools.

South Africans are using #YouKnowItsAColouredSchool to draw attention to racist stereotypes and inadequate school conditions faced by “coloured” students, or students of mixed racial heritage. The hashtag received more than 4,000 mentions in one day. Many communities remain marginalised with little funding for education due to policies implemented during the Apartheid era.

Netizens are using the hashtag to highlight the lack of resources and need for better infrastructure in “coloured” schools.
