Nicaraguans demand police chief resign after anti-drug operation kills innocents

National police apologise as mourning citizens express outrage.

Nicaragua’s police chief Aminta Granera found herself under fire after an anti-drug operation mistakenly targeted an innocent family in Managua. On July 11, plain-clothes officers tried to stop a car suspected of carrying drugs. The driver thought the undercover police were criminals and did not stop. The police opened fire and an accident occurred. A 22-year-old and two 11-year-olds were killed. Four survivors, including two minors, were injured. The family had just attended church.
