Selfies and dissent as Lithuania takes down Soviet statues

Vilnius mayor calls monuments ‘Soviet lies’.

Soviet-era statues have been positioned on Lithuania’s Green Bridge since 1952, but the country’s capital of Vilnius began to dismantle the sculptures this week. There have long been calls to remove the sculptures, which are the last monuments to the Soviet army in Vilnius, though some say the statues are a reminder of the country’s history.

Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius tweeted about the removal of the statues.
