Fed up Hong Kong residents complain about drippy air conditioners with #DropTheDrip

Crowdsourcing campaign aims to report faulty cooling devices for government officials to address.

Tired of those leaky air conditioners dropping water on your head while walking down the street? Well, you are not alone. Some Hong Kong residents are fighting back where they live by reporting the location of faulty devices through a crowdsourcing “Drop the Drip” campaign.

In Hong Kong, it is illegal to have an air conditioner that drips water. Offenders could be fined more than $1000 if prosecuted. According to South China Morning Post, more than 19,700 complaints were filed last year, but only three people were prosecuted. As of June, no one has been prosecuted for the more than 8000 complaints filed this year, which is why some have taken matters into their own hands.

Residents have been uploading pictures and videos where drip incidents have occurred and are geotagging them on Instagram with #DropTheDrip. To view all the reported cases, check out the campaign’s Facebook page
