South Africans parody #WhatTheyFoundInMaropeng

Discovery of ancient bones leads to tongue-in-cheek speculation about what else could be in country’s caves.

Inspired by what researchers say is the discovery of ancient remains of an early human ancestor, South Africans online are joking about what else could be buried in the caves of their country.

More than 1,500 bone fragments were first discovered in 2013 in the Rising Star Cave in Maropeng, South Africa. In two recently published papers, researchers say the remains come from “Homo naledi”, a new species in the lineage of modern humans.
