Kashmir crisis

Images of young Kashmiris with facial pellet wounds are circulating online following protests this month in Indian-administered Kashmir. The demonstrations, which some argue have been the deadliest in years, have left dozens dead and more than 1,300 seriously wounded.

The clashes between protesters and security forces broke out after Indian troops killed Burhan Wani, a 22-year-old Kashmiri who was outspoken against Indian rule in the region. But was Wani’s death just the tipping point?

Many Kashmiris say the Indian government has failed to engage with them, curtailing their ability to discuss a viable political solution.  

In response to the ongoing protests, the Indian government has reportedly temporarily blocked telecom networks and banned some newspapers in the area.

Some argue these recent events highlight how fragile the situation has been in the region for years. And many are questioning whether things will be different after the dust settles.
 

Government officials say resolving the situation is a top priority. So, what needs to be done to effectively address the crisis? We discuss today at 19:30 GMT.
