#ZimbabweDecides2018: What’s next for post-Mugabe Zimbabwe?

Zimbabweans voted on Monday in the country’s first election since former president Robert Mugabe was forced from power after almost 40 years.

Without Mugabe’s name on the ballot, voters had to choose from a field of 23 candidates, with incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa, 75, facing a tough challenge from Nelson Chamisa, the 40-year-old leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change. Mnangagwa, of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front, has been president since the military toppled Mugabe in a bloodless coup.

Chamisa – a lawyer and pastor known for his charisma – has called the election a choice between Zimbabwe’s past and future, while former intelligence chief Mnangagwa has pledged to deliver jobs and embark on economic reforms.
