Ethiopian journalists sentenced for 'terrorism'
Critics say government is using anti-terror law to stifle dissent.
On Friday, exiled Ethiopian journalist Abebe Gellaw was sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison by Ethiopia's high court. He is one of 23 journalists and activists, along with prominent blogger Eskinder Nega, who received sentences ranging from 8 years to life in prison for terrorism charges.
Gellaw was a recent guest on The Stream to discuss Ethiopia's use of anti-terrorism laws to prosecute reporters and anti-government activists. He appeared alongside exiled opposition figure Berhanu Nega, who was also sentenced Friday to life in prison.
Gellaw spoke with digital producer Malika Bilal about his reaction to the sentencing.
