Reports claim 450 Palestinian prisoners could be freed as early as next Tuesday thanks to an Egyptian- and German-brokered deal between Israel and Hamas for the release of Gilad Shalit. The 25-year-old Israeli soldier was captured in a 2006 Hamas-led cross-border raid.

Hamas Leader Khaled Meshaal said the release of the Palestinian prisoners would take place in two phases: 450 detainees will be released in “one week”, and another 550 will be freed in “two months”. The prisoners scheduled for release include some who are serving life sentences.

Shalit is expected to arrive in Israel on Wednesday. The Israeli justice department said a complete list of prisoners will be published over the weekend. The Israeli public will have 48 hours to raise any legal challenges.
