On March 11, millions of people worldwide marked one year since the Japan earthquake by calling for an end to the use of nuclear power. The earthquake and ensuing tsunami crippled the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, leading to the worst nuclear crisis since the 1986 Chernobyl incident.
The Japanese government, however, wants to gradually return to nuclear power. All but two of Japan’s 54 reactors ceased operating for inspections after last year's nuclear disaster, and now the government has announced that the country could soon suffer a power shortage if the last two functioning reactors are shut down by the spring.
