Three Tibetans self-immolate in three days

With the latest wave of protests, Chinese Twitter users debate their country’s Tibet policies.

An 18-year-old Tibetan died after setting himself on fire in southwestern China on Monday. The incident marked the third Tibetan self-immolation in three days, and the 25th in the past year. Just a day earlier, a 32-year-old mother died after setting herself ablaze in the same region.

Activists claim the immolations took place in protest of China’s alleged repression of religious and cultural freedom in Tibet. The Chinese government labels those to self-immolate as “terrorists” and claims its control of Tibet has brought needed development to the region.

On Twitter, some Chinese users questioned the effectiveness of self-immolation as a protest tactic and whether or not it conforms to Tibetan Buddhism.
